1963 Heddon Fishing Lure Catalog

The 1963 Heddon fishing lure Catalog / Heddon Finer Tackle provides collectors with a detailed look at the lures and fishing tackle offered by the James Heddon's Sons, out of Dowagiac, Michigan. Heddon was one of the most influential fishing lure manufacturers of the twentieth century. By 1963, Heddon had undergone an ownership change but was still a giant in the fishing lure industry and continued to produce lures, rods and reels popular with anglers and collectors today. Marketed as "World's Largest Producer of Artificial Baits and Custom Built Rods". Vintage fishing lure catalogs like this are important reference materials for identifying lure models, studying finishes and packaging, and researching the history of classic fishing tackle.

Keep your collection out of direct sunlight. Seems obvious but sometimes it is not. Direct sunlight can destroy lures, catalogs and other items over time.

Historical Notes from the 1963 Heddon Catalog
One thing that I really like about collecting vintage catalogs is that they are a time capsule of that moment in history. The cover of this one certainly speaks to that. The fisherman with a cigarette dragging in his mouth looking down at his reel and tacklebox. A classic photo. NOT something you would ever see today for any product but certainly a common scene at the time. I can picture my own father out in the boat or on shore just like this.
The front half of this catalog is just jam packed again with rods and reels showing how dominant Heddon was in this space during this time. Their rods and reels show up at many tackle shows and garage sales now and you can see why. The lures start on page 36 and are full of a classic lineup of Heddon spooks. From River Runts and Punkinseeds to Sonics and Tadpolly's. All of the classics are there.
Page 46 shows the Famous Heddon Pocket Kits, a collectors dream page today. Page 47 is a full page ad for the Toni Spinner in a bottle. One of the more famous Heddon ads of the time. Page 49 is the Color Chart. The last page of this scan is an added bonus that came with the catalog. It is for the Heddon Cobra, a newer addition. The full page insert is a great display ad for the Cobra.
