From a Mid Atlantic fishing message board
I hate getting a hook out of a fish when the hook is in deep and the barb makes it difficult to remove the hook without killing the fish. I finally have made my favorite lures barb-less. This week I caught a decent size bass and the hook was in deep but I was able to take a pair of needle nose pliers and twisted out the hook easily. It saved a lot of time and I was back fishing and the fish was sent on its way.
To make a hook barb-less take the same needle nose pliers and flatten the barb. Then take a grooved hook sharpener and drag the hook through the groove a couple of times to get it nice and sharp. By doing this it will save you a lot of grief and you will not lose anymore fish then you would have lost with a barbed hook.
