Finding a fishing article in the Wall Street Journal is rare. This is interesting because there is a sudden surge of interest in bow hunting for alligator gar. The Departments of Natural Resources (DNR) in some of the southern states are jumping in because alligator gar do not reproduce quickly and can take up to 11 years to reach reproductive maturity. "After September, every Southern state with gar populations except Louisiana will have some kind of alligator gar fishing limits." This is one of those situations where people think there is an unlimited supply of these fish and later they are wondering where they all went. The DNR is stepping in before there is a problem so this fishery will be healthy for future fishermen and bow hunters. Although catching a gar on hook an line is tough because their mouth is mostly bone and hooks do not easily penetrate the bone, also gars stink when you take them out of the water (a fact not mentioned in the article).
