This isn't your typical day on the lake, it came from a story written in a local paper.
At a small private lake in Pennsylvania I was fishing for bass or whatever fish wanted to get caught. I cast out a night crawler and a decent size bass, for Pennsylvania, was hooked. I was using light tackle so I brought it in carefully toward shore. Just when it was at the shore line I stepped into the shallow water to grab it. As I put my hand into the mouth of the bass a water snake bit my hand. It was probably going for the bass and I put my hand in its way. I unhooked the bass and let it go and at that point the pain started. I knew I was in trouble. Fortunately my wife was near by and helped me to the car and we drove to a hospital. I wrapped my belt around my arm above the red swollen area in order to keep the poison in my lower arm. I had no idea if that was the right thing to do, it wasn’t. The arm was starting to swell and when I came to the emergency room they saw me pretty quick although I did have to give my insurance card. After that I felt sick and had trouble breathing. The doctors helped me, although my wife said she watched the doctor call up an information line to find out what to do. I eventually had to have surgery on my hand to remove the destroyed tissue. Finding a cotton mouth that far north was unusual. I now use a net to bring in a hooked fish.
