out side one of my den window ,the one nearest the side of tthe house ,sits a section my my pride and joy .some years back , when i still the bull of the woods ,i carried stones of and old stone wall up on my back hill and built a wall the width of the house ,and extended the wall out about 12 feet .within that wall lives perky,a chipmonk that befrined us and wait for me to put out some peanuts for him .then there's sally ,a huge black salamander with yellow spot ,she knows after a good rain i'll find some worms to put near the wall for here to find when shes not afraid to come out . i've planted both a mirad of wild and perrinel flowers that with my loving care bloom profuselly ,during that time ,i figure that little patch has nursed 12 different familys of cotton tails .on one end of the little garden sits a nice black maple ,on the other , i planted a white birch cluster ,4 trees to be exact---one for each of my four jewels ,my daughters ,over time the cluster has grown into a beautiful clump of trees .the neighbours ,and all who know me and pass by my house going into the village remark what a beautiful white birch cluter they were as well as the others in front of my home .--hanging from the branches is a suet feeder--all summer and thru the harsh winds of winter ,the birds visiting the feed have been a constant source of amusement for me ,and my 2 furball dogs as they sit in my recliner and watch then with the enthusiam of cat watching a mouse .sometimes the deer will forsake my vegtable garden and feast on the new youk asters in the small garden patch ,and when done , some times they will bed there , or amble off the 20 feet or so to my fruit trees near the well , and brouse on the lower branches .many times sitting at the pc in the den ,i can hear the wind chimes as they tinkle in the breeze ,or ,as my favorite one , which i made from the door bell tubes at my mothers house when she pastd away ,they make a awsome sounding mellow bong, like a churcch bell reminding me of mom .no expensive chime can sound better as those 5 tubes of different sizes as they gently sway in the evening breeze .
the past 2 seasons have been extremely harsh on those birches , especially this winter . threw 2 previous ice storms ,then a wet heavy snow ,and now this sleet , they have finall had enough ....and given up . 2 long sections have snapped about one third of the way up ,one section is laying entirely flat on the ground from the root section to the top, the last ,is so completely bent ,that it will never recover .devestated for shure .looking out the window now and then as i write this , i can see 3 s-cker growths about about 3 foot high that we're growing from the root stock ,maybe a fourth will appear ,and maybe ,i'll be here long enough to once again see 4 beautiful white birches ,feeding the birds ,and a wind chime reminding some one of home . you all have a dandy day-----lou
